Mathematical models for Diabetes 
A nice review article titled A critical review of mathematical models and data used in diabetology is avaliable full text.
Four criteria for the best mathematical model in biomedical field could be:
- to be physiologically based,
- having parameters that can be estimated with a reasonable precision,
- parameters with values that are reasonable and have physiological interpretation,
- best able to simulate the dynamics of the system with smallest number of identifiable parameters.
